Enrich describes cowboys as strong yet gentle. She also describes them as not being good communicators. Although some things seem negative toward cowboys, the overall tone that she has toward them is admirable. By using descriptive diction, Enrich enhances her point that the way that society has shaped the image of cowboys is not the way that they really are. Enrich starts her essay off with a description of a Marlboro add. She describes her longing for cowboys. But the Marlboro add shows a cowboy as tough, but she describes the ones she knows as gentle. Society has put the image on cowboys that they are bad at communicating and that it has become a bad thing, but she puts the tone that it is because they are alone in the hills and on the ranch for so long that it is more difficult for them to communicate. The use of stong diction allows Enrich to enhance her view on cowboys.

Secrecy can be found in every aspect of daily life. Sante states that the internet takes away all privacy. Once something is posted, there is no way to know that it will ever come off. A persons privacy can never be truly private on the internet.
The next topic mentioned in Sante's essay was the Soviet Union. Due to many rules and regulations secrecy became a large ritual in their daily lives. In order to become a better place, the Soviets would hold secret meetings. Although this part of the essay was a little bit confusing, it still stressed the problem of secrecy. They might not have done it for a bad reason, but secrecy still is a secret.
The last topic in Sante's essay is confessional culture, it is taught in churches that confessing is the way to heaven. It takes away any chance of a person to have privacy. They have become so caught up in daily activities, that the thought that they would not confess something, would scare a person because confessing is the right thing to do. People also tells another their secrets because they want to feel close to them and confide in them.

Ethics and personal values of a single person can be affected by many different things or people. They can be affected by their parents or family, or where they grew up. To teach these values in school would be as if they were telling a person they can not be themself. One is shaped by their values and their ethics. Also, by teaching them in school would be shaping people into clones, everyone would be the same. Instead of having many people with different views, values and ethics, everyone would be very similar. There would be no diversity and there would be no way to learn from others. Ethics and personal values should not be taught in schools.

Nobodiness can be found in many different places, such as at school, a mall, a social gathering or even on a team. Many times a person can feel like a nobody if they have no friends or they can feel like a nobody if they are unnoticed. At a party one could find themselves filled with nobodiness because no one went out of their way to welcome you in, or no one noticed you were their, or even if you are the one sitting in the corner by yourself. At school someone can feel like a nobody if they have friends but they are just there. They don't feel like people notice them. That person who is just there feels left out because they are not the center of attention.

When I first started reading "Tuesdays With Morrie," I was very judgmental and I did not like the book. As I continued reading, I was able to relate to some of the lessons that Morrie taught Mitch. It taught me that when you learn to be satisfied with what you have then you can live a happy life. I also took away that the best thing that you can get is when you give. By reading this book it changed my opinion about material items. It made me really realize that you do not need these items to live a full life, what you really need is a friends and family by yourside.

Passion is different for everyone, for me it is striving to do the best I can and putting all my focus into what I am doing. Any one person can have a passion for anything, for love, for hate, for sports or for music. My passion is for swimming.
I spend hours and hours in the water and at the pool so I can be the best that I can. I live to swim and swim to live. Whether it is spending time at the pool or at a meet from seven in the morning until 9 at night, because I have a passion for the sport.
People think that swimming lap after lap is boring, but the way my team mates push me and challenge me makes it exciting. To be able to see individual results at each meet, isn't like most sports. The feeling of pushing yourself to see what you can do, can not be duplicated. Through my friends, competition and training, I have developed a passion for swimming that can not be duplicated.

Wealth brings happiness, a statement that is widely debated. Although it seems that if you have alot of money, that you can be happy, but the characters in "The Great Gatsby" prove otherwise.
The hollowness that is shown in Gatsby is an example of how you can have all the money in the world, and throw huge parties, but still not be happy. Gatsby strives to get the attention of Daisy, who he fell in love with long ago and has been trying to get the attention of her ever since.
Gatsby dedicated his life to becoming very wealthy after working for millionare at a young age. He wanted to become wealthy because he wanted to do anything he could to get to the social position, and wealth to win over Daisy.
The fact that Gatsby would do anything to become wealthy, including criminal activity to get the wealth. But, the different types of wealth Gatsby and Daisy have seem to keep them apart. The fact that they are both wealthy, but have no love, shows that even though they are both very wealthy, they are hollow and unhappy.

Sacrifice
I give all my free time to swimming. I swim back and forth over a hundred times a day, I do more flips in one practice than a cheerleader does in a lifetime. People say I sacrifice my time, but for me it is a lifestyle choice. It is something that I want to do.
A sacrifice means to surrender or give up, I am not giving up anything. I am gaining strength and knowledge, knowledge of how to keep my life in check.
Swimming is something that people find boring, lap after lap, it is pointless. They don't see it how I do, it is fascinating. Training with friends, challenging each other to go faster and friendly competition with your team mates. I live to swim all the time, whether it is waking up before the sun is up or staying at finals til the sun is always done, I do not sacrifice my time to swim, I choose to use my freetime to swim.
Sacrifice is a foreign term to me, I don't listen to people that tell me I have no life outside of swimming, because swimming is my life and this is how I want to spend it. I strive to be strong, focussed and stubborn about the right things.

Old and Young
You see an elderly person, you think wise, wrinkles and slow. You see someone who is young, you think youthful, energitic and innocent. Opposites sometimes are two things that can be the more similar than anything else.
When you are young, you still need the care of adults, that is the same for elders. They depend on other people. As a young child you depend on your parents and as you start to get older, they think that their dependence on others is less and less. But, when they get to a certain age, they need to be helped. They first need help from their parents, but now they get help from their kids, nieghbors and close people around them.
Even though different ages, and different eras in time bring about different people, young or old, but their dependence on others never change.

Being comfortable always seems like it should fit anyone, but the society has changed it to wear there should only be one comfortable. If you are to become comfortable with something that is not accepted by society, you are demmed different. This is not what comfortable means. The Box Man does not fit societies views as being comfortable, he is demmed different. The cat and the soup lady are considered normal because they live in a house and they have the material items, so they should be comfortable. What society sees as comfortable, or normal, doesn't always mean it is comfortable for a single person.

Wicked
A twisted story of friendship, love and the fate. Elphaba, the quiet girl with a big fate, comes to school to look after her sister who is very bright and is in a wheel chair, no knowing that she will become so much more. Galinda, the popular and gregorious girl, is very excited to find out she has her own room, until Elphaba is assigned to her room. Two girls, opposite in personality and in morals, are forced to live together and soon to settle their differences. Soon enough they learn that the other is not all that bad and they become friends, although this seems as if it is the perfect ending, Elphaba is secretly falling for Galinda’s boyfriend. She does not show it, she would rather keep her friendship with Galinda. Elpahaba has a dream, to be with the wizard, but when things start to get out of hand, her dream starts to seem far off. She has an amazing talent of magic, and when the wizard realizes what she has, he wants to use her, but in a bad way. Soon, word gets out that it is Elpahba that is creating all the problems and people start to hate her. This tests Elphaba’s and Galinda’s friendship, and neither of them know whether or not they can still be friends at the end. Soon they realize that they are still a lot different than each other and staying together may not be the best and safest idea. By Elphaba running it makes the people think she truly is guilty and they all hate her. The tin man was turned into tin when Elphaba‘s sister casts a spell and it went wrong, she was ruler of munchkin land but they were unhappy under her rule. The scarecrow is said to be Elphaba‘s lover, Fiyero. Fiyero and Galinda were a couple when they all went to school before Elphaba was presumed wicked. Elphaba was an animals rights activists, was angry when the animals were losing their ability to speak so in her attempt to save her professor, a lion, she accidently turns him into a full lion who is able to speak but is cowardly. Those three characters along with Dorothy set off in the classic adventure of “Wizard of Oz.” Although Elphaba and Galinda were very close friends, they still had different morals which led them in the opposite directions of each other. “Wicked” puts a twist on the classic wicked witch of the west.

Some nonfiction history books that I have read are "The Diary of Anne Frank," "In Cold Blood," and "Not Out of Africa." My favorite quote from those books is from "In Cold Blood," “You pursue the negative…You want not to give a damn, to exist without responsibility, without faith or friends or warmth.” I like this quote because it is almost ironic because you have to exist with those items. I also like this quote because it shows me that you can be negetive but it won't get you anywhere. It really shows me that you have to stay poitive.

Four years ago, I started swimming. I never would have thought that I would become, "Kady Rubio, the one who swims." I have never had the aspiration to go to the olympics, but I have a passion for the sport than no one can understand. Through my parents, my older sister Holly, my teammates and my coach, I have learned that I can do the impossible.
